Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography (ASCeXAM®)

EXAM APPLICATION:

If you prefer to mail an examination application to the NBE, please  download the printable application on the right hand side of this page. Along with the determination of a testing center region code, you will be required to submit the following documentation:

  • Completed and signed two page application

  • A copy of your current license to practice medicine with an expiration date or if you do not have a valid license to practice medicine an original, notarized letter from your program director stating you are currently enrolled in a ACGME accredited training program and in good standing

    NOTE: Non-US Licensed Physicians applying for the ASCeXAM® must supply the following:
        If your medical license does not have an expiration date, you are required to supply ONE of the following:
    - An original letter from the Medical Council stating your license is permanent
    - An original certificate of good standing; dated no more than 12 months prior to date application received

    All documentation must be supplied in English. If original documentation is not in English, a certified translation must be attached to each document.

  • Application Fee
    (The NBE accepts check, money order, VISA or MasterCard)
  • Sign bottom right hand side of application

Faxed or scanned applications will not be accepted.

The NBE recommends that if mail is used you obtain proof of delivery.

The certification application and supporting documents for certification is not required to register for the examination and can be submitted at any time.

LOCATION

The ASCeXAM is offered as a computer-based format multiple-choice examination through Prometric Testing Centers.  Computer-based testing allows candidates to take his or her examination in the convenient testing center close to home saving time and money. Further, the centers offer privacy along with a quiet and comfortable environment to take the exam. Examination questions and visual images are easily viewable from the computer screen and are generally of higher quality when presented on a computer.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants for the 2014 ASCeXAM® must hold a valid license to practice medicine at the time of application or must currently be in an ACGME accredited training program and in good standing. If you do not have a valid license to practice medicine and you are in an ACGME accredited training program, your training director must provide an original, notarized letter verifying this information. The letter must also be on appropriate letterhead and include the ACGME program number. (Note: If you have a valid medical license at the time of application, you do not need to provide a letter from your training director.)

Non-US Licensed Physicians applying for the ASCeXAM® must supply the following:

Non-North American trained physicians must provide equivalent documentation of permission to practice medicine in the country of principal resident. All documentation must be supplied in English.

NOTE: Only a copy of an applicant's current license to practice medicine or letter of good standing, completed application, and the application fee is required to sit for the ASCeXAM®.

CERTIFICATION APPLICATION

Physicians who passed the ASCeXAM® in 1996-2013, use the conversion application in the ASCeXAM Certification Application to apply for board certification.

For Physicians who participated in the 2014 ASCeXAM®, please refer to the ASCeXAM Certification Requirements and Application provided on our website.

The certification application and supporting documents are not required to register for the examination and can be submitted at any time.

Note: For those interested in taking the ASCeXAM® and applying for certification: The practice experience pathway will no longer be available to those physicians who complete their cardiovascular disease fellowship training after June 30, 2009. For those physicians the only route to certification will be through the fellowship pathway.
