Certification Explained

Purpose 

The purposes of the certification process are to: 

• Establish the domain of the practice of echocardiography for the purpose of certification
• Assess the level of knowledge demonstrated by a licensed physician practitioner of echocardiography in a valid manner
• Enhance the quality of echocardiography and individual professional growth in echocardiography
• Formally recognize individuals who satisfy the requirements set by the NBE 
• Serve the public by encouraging quality patient care in the practice of echocardiography

Levels of Certification Offered:

1. 1. Adult Echocardiography
      1. Transthoracic 2-D and Doppler Echocardiography (t)
      2. Transesophageal Echocardiography (e)
      3. Transthoracic plus Transesophageal Echocardiography (te)
      4. Transthoracic plus Stress Echocardiography (ts)
      5. Comprehensive (c) which includes all three procedures – Transthoracic, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiography
   2. Recertification in Adult Echocardiography
      1. Transthoracic 2-D and Doppler Echocardiography (t)
      2. Transesophageal Echocardiography (e)
      3. Transthoracic plus Transesophageal Echocardiography (te)
      4. Transthoracic plus Stress Echocardiography (ts)
      5. Comprehensive (c) which includes all three procedures – Transthoracic, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiography
   3. Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography
   4. Recertification in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography
   5. Basic Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography
   6. Recertification in Basic Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography
   7. Critical Care Echocardiography
